With New Carlisle already struggling to support its citizens’ fuel needs with only 50% of the town’s Speedway gas stations offering gas, the city is about to get hit even harder.
Main and Lake learned Thursday evening that the “Super America” Speedway, also known as the one “next to the bank,” is now unable to provide gas to New Carlislians. This outage is in addition to the west side Speedway which has been without fuel for months.
The cause of the outage is unclear at this point, but local residents fear it could be another leak into the city’s groundwater system. The west side Speedway leaked thousands of gallons of fuel into the city’s groundwater back in September. Another theory is that a pack of ratcats got into the fuel lines and chewed through them, causing all the fuel to absorb deep into the soil below the gas station.
Of particular concern in this case is the cost of gas, which is sure to rise with literally no other options of places to fuel up. A cashier who wished to remain anonymous and has seen the peaks and valleys of gas prices over the years speculated that gas “could hit $10 a gallon.”
Other industries could be hit by this shortage as well. With thousands of residents stranded without gas to get outside town, local stores are sure to have their stock decimated. As of 8:15 pm, Howard’s was already entirely out of stock of Busch Light and Kraft macaroni and cheese.
As of now there is no estimate for when either station will offer fuel again. Main and Lake will update this story as new information becomes available.
